A French scientist was barred from entering the US after immigration officials at a Houston airport searched his phone and found messages criticising Trump’s research policies. Philippe Baptiste, France’s research minister, called the expulsion “concerning,” saying academic freedom must be upheld. The scientist, affiliated with CNRS, was attending a conference when he was detained and sent back to Europe.
The space researcher reportedly underwent a random check upon arrival, during which his work laptop and personal phone were searched. According to diplomatic sources, US authorities accused him of “hateful” messages and initially linked them to terrorism. His devices were confiscated, and he was told of an FBI investigation before being expelled. No formal charges were eventually pursued.
This incident raises serious concerns about academic freedom and freedom of speech in Trump’s United States.
